Natalie Portman steals thunder in new ‘Thor’ promo

Natalie Portman Steals Thunder in New ‘Thor’ Promo

The trailer for ‘Thor’ which aired during the Super Bowl left most comic-book connoisseurs unimpressed. But this new remix perhaps will light a fire. Chris Hemsworth ably brings Thor to life, but most of the talk is about Natalie Portman.

For those who are not yet addicted, the film tells the story of a mighty warrior [Thor] whose life among the gods ends when he restarts a war. For this he is banished from the realm of Asgard and must live among mortals. But once on Earth he redeems himself by defending its people against Asgard’s darkest villain.

And at his side you’ll find Natalie Portman.

Already favored to win an Oscar for ‘Black Swan,’ Porter appears as Jane Foster, the $150-million movie’s love interest. And what makes an Oscar candidate want to do comic-book movies, you ask? Easy – fellow Oscar nominee Kenneth Branagh was directing.

“I was just like, ‘Kenneth Branagh doing ‘Thor’ is weird!” she tells Movie Talk. “I’ve gotta do it!’”

As Jane Foster, Natalie plays an astrophysicist who meets Thor after he is cast down from Asgard, and the science aspect was a major factor in Natalie playing the role;

“I know it sounds silly, but it’s those little things that makes girls think it’s possible,” the 29-year old actress explains. “It doesn’t give them a role model of ‘Oh, I just have to dress cute in movies.’”

But the history of comic-book adaptations might make her think – Halle Berry won accolades for ‘X-Men,’ but her solo as ‘Catwoman’ was an unequivocal flop. Ben Affleck also won awards for ‘Good Will Hunting,’ but his role as the blind vigilante ‘Daredevil’ was a serious disappointment. And Josh Brolin’s outing in “Jonah Hex” is better forgotten.

But for comic book fans the next 18-months are a banquet – ‘Thor’ opens on May 6th, then ‘X-Men: First Class’ on June 3rd, and ‘The Avengers’ is currently slated to have them standing in line on May 4th, 2012.

Watch the trailer and let’s hear what you think? Does Natalie fit in the movie? And do you plan to see it – let’s hear your reviews….
